The Ultimate Jewelry Style Guide: How to Accessorize Like a Pro

Choosing and styling your jewelry to complement your outfit becomes an easy task when you follow this style tips and start getting creative with what you already have in your closet.

Let’s face it, accessories can make or break your whole outfit. When deciding what you are wearing it’s important to go for pieces that complete your look. It should be the last decision you make when putting together what you are wearing.

There are some things that you should keep in mind when choosing your accessories:

  • Are you wearing some kind of statement piece on your outfit?

  • What colors does my outfit have?

  • What kind of patterns am I wearing?

After assessing your outfit, it’s time to decide which accessories to choose. There are a lot of options when it comes to accessorize, and it literally goes from head to toes. You can choose from hair clips, earrings, sunglasses, necklaces, bracelets, rings, belts, bags or shoes. The possibilities are endless. Although you don’t have to wear them at once, the clue is to mix and match those that go perfect with your outfit.

Layers

Now, one of my favorite jewelry trends is layering. You can get creative stacking bangles, necklaces or rings. You can experiment with contrasting lengths, shapes, textures, and colors. Now beware of not making too much out of it. Stacking all the above can be overwhelming and spoil your outfit. Let’s break it down a little.

If you are layering necklaces, try to go for different lengths. When I’m layering I like to start with chokers that usually have a length of 16” and adding two inches to each other piece. You can wear as many as you want, but I like to wear no more than 3 or 4 at the same time. For bangles and bracelets, you can wear as many as you want and if it is summertime you can have a party in your arm wearing different colors and textures. Just have fun with it. The same goes for rings. You can wear small thin rings together and add different designs and stones, including knuckle rings.

But, how should you do it? It's easy. After deciding your outfit gather your selection and play with lengths, textures, metals, and colors and see what works. Snap a picture of the combinations you made so you can refer to them later and save time when putting together future outfits.

Do the same with your bracelets and rings.

When is too much?

If you are wearing statement earrings or necklaces that draw attention to your face, probably you won’t need a stack of bangles that may compete for attention. If your outfit already has a statement pattern or your makeup has bright colors, you should tone it down a little with the accessories near your face.

If you are wearing a pair of bold earrings maybe you should wear a subtle necklace or no necklace at all. It all will depend on your style, how comfortable you feel and the occasion.

Let’s talk about earrings

Earrings are always framing your face (as your eyebrows, but that’s for another post), so they will always be on the field of view for anyone who is talking to you. That being said, you should pay special attention to your selection. Always look for pieces that accentuate your complexion and eyes.

Mix and match

A couple of years ago, talking about this would be a fashion sin, but now mixing metals has become more popular. Think about contrasting pieces such as a silver necklace with a rose gold charm. Try to look for those accessories that you already have and play with colors and metals. You’ll be surprised at what you will come up with.

It’s all about necklaces

Before we dig into this subject, ask yourself this question, do I actually need a necklace? This is important because if your earrings are already bold and/or your outfit has details on the neckline, you should probably skip this step. Now, if your answer was yes then you have to decide which color, texture, and length completes your outfit.

Rings

For your ring game try to stack them and add a creative mix and match look. If you are wearing a statement piece, you should probably go with just one. I prefer simple stack rings that I can wear on odd fingers. See what fits your style.

Make it fun

Fashion is all about fun and being creative. Don’t stick to the “rules” and create your own style and what makes you feel pretty and confident. If it works for you, then go for it!
